Piazza
Navona in Rome is approximately 4.5 km from
the Park Hotel dei Massimi and we suggest you take
one of the local buses to reach it - ask the hotel
concierge for more information on how to reach Piazza
Navona.
The best time to visit Piazza Navona is in the early evening when the square is packed with street entertainers, artists painting portraits and caricatures and lots of trendy Romans taking their pre dinner passeggiata or stroll.
The square is called Navona because it takes the form of a ship i.e. oblong rather than square and has curved edges - Navona is the Roman word for big ship. Indeed in Roman times the square was often flooded to allow mock sea battles to be staged for the entertainment of Roman Emperors and nobles.
Important
architectural works within the square are: the fountain
of four rivers ( Bernini ) and the Church of Sant'Agnese
in Anone (Borromini) - Bernini was a great rival of
Borromini and Rome contains many fine examples of
their works including some near the Park dei Massimi
